Our Deck Materials
At Hand-e-Workz we build decks in Ottawa using a variety of materials including wooden decks (available in many wood types and finishes) and composite decks – all to achieve the look you desire.
Cedar is a popular type of wood for decks in Ottawa due to its pleasant aesthetics (lovely grain & colour), as well as its environmentally friendly, reliable and stable nature.
Pressure treated wood decking is a cost-effective wooden deck option. It is rot resistant, repels insects and stands up well during the Ottawa winters & humid summers.
Composite decks in Ottawa are becoming more popular due to their solid build and durability, making them more resistant to the elements & requiring the least maintenance.
Here in Ottawa, decks are exposed to all sorts of extremes! From cold, harsh, snow winters to hot, humid summers that bring thunderstorms with rain, wind and hail, Ottawa weather takes its toll on your deck. Maintaining your deck, both the look and integrity, is an important part of preserving and growing the value of your home. It’s an investment that also pays off in quality of life while you enjoy the deck.
Count on Hand-e-Workz for worry-free repair and restoration of your deck. We’re highly skilled and experienced in identifying and repairing (or rebuilding) problem areas on residential decks. We handle deck re-sloping, resurfacing, structural repair, framing, soffit and siding installation – and much more. Hand-e-Workz will work with you to come up with the best repair plan for your deck, fitting your budget and meeting your desire for a beautiful home.

Beautiful fence, wonderful people. Thanks guys!!”

Frequently Asked Questions
Under the City of Ottawa bylaws, “A building permit is required for a deck that is attached or adjacent to a building having a walking surface of greater than 24″ above adjacent grade. Other decks, not described above, that have a walking surface greater than 24″ above adjacent grade and area greater that 10 square metres (approximately 108 square feet) also require a building permit.” When you work with Hand-e-Workz, you’re getting an experienced team; let us handle the building permits when building your deck in Ottawa.
When it comes to building & maintaining attractive, high-quality decks in Ottawa, there are a number of options currently available. The first is the traditional deck material of pressure-treated lumber; these are often made of pine or similar, sturdy woods. While cedar is a great aesthetic wood deck material, bear in mind cedar decks may need to be replaced sooner than a pine deck. What about composite decks? This deck material is becoming more popular. Composite decks require less maintenance and are less subject to wear-and-tear from the elements (especially those long, harsh Ottawa winters and our humid Ottawa summers). Within those categories of decks, you also have a wide array of choices in deck colour, texture, finish, etc.
The time it takes to build your Ottawa deck can vary depending on a number of factors. The biggest one is the size of the deck being built, as well as the layout and the amount of labour involved. Weather can play a role as well; if we get one of those Ottawa summer storms, for example, we may have to halt construction and return when it’s dry. Typical building time for a new deck in Ottawa can range anywhere from a few days to a couple of weeks. When we provide the estimate to build your Ottawa deck, we will also quote an approximate time duration.
When working with fire and/or high temperatures on your new deck, please exercise caution! Allow enough distance between your grill or barbecue and any form of structure, such as railings, house exterior, deck floor, fence, etc. Always keep an eye on the grill and never leave it unattended on your deck or anywhere else so long as there is a fire or the coals/grill/elements are hot. If a coat of finish (or varnish, etc.) has recently been applied, make sure the deck and/or fence are dry and there’s been ample time for the fumes or vapor to dissipate BEFORE proceeding to light up your BBQ. Also, it’s a good idea to place a grilling mat between your grill and the deck floor – this protects the deck and keeps it in fine shape. Placing a cover over your BBQ is also recommended (once the grill has cooled off). If you spill meat or other food on the deck, it is recommended to clean the deck with a de-greaser – that way, the fire risk is mitigated.
After we have completed building your wooden deck in Ottawa, you’ll want to give it a month or so to settle – after which you can apply a wood sealer. This gives you protection as well as a colour finish. Beyond that, wooden decks look their best when you stain and seal the deck every year. Those Ottawa winters are long, harsh and cold; while our summers reach the other extreme with heat and humidity. Wood will expand and contract, and the surface will show cracks or chips from use. Sealing and staining adds protection as well as a nice aesthetic. If you have a composite deck, there’s less maintenance involved; still, you’ll want to wipe down the deck periodically, making sure it’s clear of debris, grease, etc.
